What it’s like
Founded in 1748 by John Wesley who created its first curriculum and compiled its
first textbooks. It has a particularly splendid position on the slopes of
Lansdown, a residential area overlooking the city. The main building is
Victorian and is at the heart of the modern school which has a vast campus of
218 acres. In these very civilised surroundings, the facilities and
accommodation are first-class. Many new buildings have been added, including a
sports hall, specialist centres for art, DT and information technology, a music
school (with recording studio) and theatre and separate drama studio. Boarding
houses have recently been refurbished, to provide a homely environment for
boarders. Though ecumenical, the school retains its links with the Methodist
Church. Originally a boys’ school, it has been co-educational now for over 30
years. A fine academic education is given and examination results are very good.
There are very strong music and art departments. The school has an exceptionally
fine range of sports, games, clubs, societies and over 70 extra-curricular
activities. It has an impressive record in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme
and a large, annual Model United Nations Conference.
