What it’s like
It has existed since about 1548 and was incorporated by royal charter in 1662. A
mile from the centre of Bradford, it comprises five main buildings on a 20-acre
site. These include the Clock House, a 17th-century manor house for the juniors
and the handsome senior school (opened in 1949). More modern buildings house the
library and IT centre, a sports hall and the Hockney Theatre. Most recently, a
sixth form centre, music school, swimming pool and all-weather pitch have been
completed. Its overall amenities are first-rate. It is in the process of
becoming fully co-educational and over a third of new pupils are now girls:
girls have been admitted to the sixth form since 1984 and in all intakes from
1999. The two principles of discipline laid down are: firstly, that pupils are
expected to know what is and what is not good conduct and to do nothing likely
to bring themselves and their school into disrepute; secondly, that study is a
discipline in itself. It provides a sound, traditional education in many
branches of learning and sets very high all-round standards. It has long been
one of the country’s most distinguished schools and examination results are
excellent. It enjoys strong local support. Sports and games are played to very
high standards; successful regional and national representation (eg rugby,
cross-country, netball, table tennis, tennis etc). There is a wide range of
clubs and activities.
